Ιωάννης Τσαμαρδίνος

Ioannis Tsamardinos, Ph.D., is Associate Professor at the Computer Science Department of University of Crete. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Intelligent Systems Program at University of Pittsburgh in 2001. He then worked as Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Informatics in Vanderbilt University until 2006 when he returned to Greece. Ioannis’ main research directions include machine learning, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence. More specifically his work emphasizes variable selection and causal discovery. Prof. Tsamardinos has over 70 publications in international journals, conferences, and books. He has participated in several national, EU, and US funded research projects. Distinctions with colleagues and students include the best performance in one of the four tasks in the recent First Causality Challenge Competition, ISMB 2005 Best Poster Winner, a Gold Medal in the Student Paper Competition in MEDINFO 2004, the Outstanding Student Paper Award in AIPS 2000, the NASA Group Achievement Award for participation in the Remote Agent team and others. International recognition has led to membership to the Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, being an Area Chair for ECML 2011, Senior PC member for IJCAI 2011, and a regular reviewer for some of the leading Machine Learning journals (e.g., JMLR, TKDE, PAMI), bioinformatics journals (e.g., Bioinformatics Journal, BMC Bioinformatics) and machine learning, artificial intelligence and biomedical informatics conferences (e.g., ECML, UAI). Statistics on recognition of work include more than 4500 citations, and h-index of 28 (as estimated by the Publish or Perish tool). Ioannis has recently been awarded the European and Greek national grants of excellence, the ERC Consolidator and the ARISTEIA II grants respectively.
